You check the AISSAC portal. Your child's dashboard shows nothing under the medical section. No school name. No venue. No date. Just blank.
Your child scored well. Registered on time. Did everything right. And now the medical list is apparently up - and the name isn't there.
This is genuinely one of the most stressful moments in the entire Sainik School admission ↗ journey. And it's more common than parents realise. Let's go through why this happens, which situations are recoverable, and what to actually do right now.
First - Understand Why the Medical List Works the Way It Does
The most important thing to understand before doing anything else is how the shortlisting process works.
Medical examination centres have been allotted only to the top three times the number of available vacancies, category-wise, school-wise, and based on registrations on the portal, as per the applicable criteria - solely for the purpose of expediting the medical examination process.
Three times the seats. That's the shortlisting ratio.
So if your child's preferred school has 20 General category seats for boys from your state, roughly 60 candidates get called for medical in that pool. If your child's rank falls below position 60 in that specific category and domicile combination at that school - they don't appear on the initial medical list.
This isn't a mistake. It isn't a glitch. It's the design of the system. The school-wise revised and updated list of candidates shortlisted for the medical examination is uploaded on the official AISSAC counselling portal. Revised. Updated. Meaning it isn't always final on the first day.
Reason 1 - Your Child Is on the Waiting List for Medical
This is the most common reason. The rank is competitive but not in the top 3x for the first medical batch.
Here's what this means practically: if any of the 60 shortlisted candidates fail the medical, their seat opens. The list gets revised. Candidates just outside the first batch move in. If the Review Medical Board finds a candidate medically unfit, that candidate is removed from the merit list - and the next eligible candidate on the merit list moves forward.
So not appearing in the first medical list is not the end. More than a few candidates who seemed to be eliminated at this stage ended up getting their medical slot in a revised list. Keep logging into the portal regularly.
Reason 2 - You Registered for AISSAC But Didn't Complete All Steps
Some parents registered on the AISSAC portal but didn't fully complete their profile, lock their school choices in time, or responded to an earlier round prompt incorrectly - and the system quietly treated them as inactive.
Check your AISSAC dashboard carefully. Look at whether your school choices are still showing as locked. Look at whether your registration shows as "complete." If any step appears incomplete, that may be why your child wasn't included in the shortlisting.
If you find an incomplete step - email [email protected] immediately with your application details and describe exactly what you're seeing on the dashboard. Document it with screenshots if possible.
Reason 3 - Category or Domicile Mismatch in the System
This one is more serious - and more common than it should be.
If the category or domicile recorded during AISSEE NTA registration doesn't match what you entered during AISSAC registration, the system may have placed your child in a different pool than intended. A candidate registered as General who should be OBC-NCL competes in a larger, more competitive pool and may fall outside the 3x medical cutoff as a result.
Similarly, if domicile state is mismatched - showing outside-state when the child is home-state eligible - the child is competing in the 33% outside-state pool instead of the 67% home-state pool. That's a significantly tougher competition.

Log in and review every detail showing on your dashboard - category, domicile, school preference. Compare it against your original NTA application. If something doesn't match, report it in writing immediately.
Reason 4 - The List for Your School Hasn't Been Updated Yet
The notification issued on 02 March 2026 was cancelled, and the 03 March 2026 notice was to be treated as the official update. Lists were released and then revised within 24 hours. Some schools updated their medical lists earlier than others.
If your child's preferred school is a newer addition to the AISSAC process, or if the school had a technical delay in uploading their shortlist, it's possible the portal simply hasn't shown their data yet. Wait 48 to 72 hours after the official notification before concluding your child wasn't shortlisted.
Try logging in late at night or early morning when server load is low. The portal sometimes fails to reflect the latest update during peak daytime traffic.
Reason 5 - The School Choices Were Too Competitive for the Rank
This is the hardest truth - and it needs to be said clearly.
If your child's choices were all very high-demand schools where the 3x shortlisting cutoff is very competitive, and your child's rank in each category-domicile pool falls outside that cutoff, no medical shortlisting happens in the first round. The system has no obligation to move you to a lower-ranked school for the medical round - it simply doesn't shortlist you anywhere.
This is exactly why filling all 10 school choices, including realistic options and New Sainik Schools, matters so much. More choices mean more pools where your rank might fall within the 3x cutoff. The Sainik School Society calls candidates in a 1:3 ratio of total qualified students - three times the number of total available seats are called for the medical round at each school. At a school with more seats or lower competition, your child's rank might be well within the medical shortlist even if it wasn't at your top choices.
What to Do Right Now - In Order
Step 1 - Wait 48 to 72 hours and recheck. Don't act on what you see on day one. Lists are revised. The school-wise revised and updated list is made available in the respective candidate login portal. Check back every day.
Step 2 - Verify every detail on your AISSAC dashboard. Category correct? Domicile correct? School choices locked? Registration showing complete? Any mismatch needs to be reported in writing immediately.
Step 3 - Email the official helpdesk. Write to [email protected] with your AISSEE application number, roll number, category, domicile, and school preferences. State clearly that your child is not appearing on the medical shortlist and ask for clarification. Be factual. Be polite. Keep a copy.
Step 4 - Email your allotted school directly. Official school email IDs are available on sainikschool.ncog.gov.in. Write with your child's name, AISSEE roll number, and allotment details, and ask for confirmation of your medical shortlisting status.
Step 5 - Stay active in the counselling process. Don't assume it's over because Round 1 medical shortlisting didn't include your child. Counselling runs multiple rounds. Seats vacated through medical failures, reconsidering candidates, or non-reporting candidates can open new medical slots. Stay logged in and respond to every portal prompt.
What You Cannot Do
You cannot appear for a medical examination without being formally shortlisted. There is no walk-in option, no offline request, and no way to appear at the medical centre without your name being in the system.
It is the responsibility of the candidate and parent to ensure timely completion of the medical. Failure to do so results in disqualification from the counselling process. But that rule applies only to those who were shortlisted and didn't appear. It doesn't apply to families who were never shortlisted in the first place.
The only path forward if you're not on the list is through official channels - email, formal representation, and staying actively engaged with the portal through every subsequent round.
Not being on the first medical list feels like the end. For some candidates, it genuinely means the rank wasn't competitive enough this year. For others - more than you'd expect - it's a temporary status that changes as the rounds progress. The only way to know which situation you're in is to stay informed, stay in the process, and keep checking every day.
