Kunwar Singh was 80 years old when he picked up a sword.
When the 1857 revolt broke out across India, Veer Kunwar Singh of Jagdishpur - present-day Bhojpur district, Arrah - was already an old man. 80 years. Physically weakened. Involved in legal disputes over his estate.
He fought anyway.
He led his forces from the front. He captured towns. He crossed states - Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh. He evaded the British for a year. The most famous episode: while crossing the Ganga, a British bullet hit his left wrist. He cut off his own hand with his sword to prevent gangrene. He offered the severed hand to the Ganga. He continued fighting. He died on April 26, 1858 - 25 days after returning to Jagdishpur in victory.
The British couldn't defeat him. He died of wounds, not in battle.
Arrah: where the Siege of Arrah happened (1857), where 18 British civilians and 50 Indian soldiers held the "Little House at Arrah" for 8 days against 3,000 armed soldiers. The world's longest multi-span extradosed bridge - Arrah-Chhapra Bridge (Veer Kunwar Singh Setu, 1,920m) - crosses the Ganga here.
