In 1583, the people of Cuncolim stood up to the Portuguese.
Five Jesuits were killed. The Catholic Church later beatified them as the Martyrs of Cuncolim. The revolt is still remembered - the village still carries that history the way old Goan villages carry everything, quietly but permanently.
The name itself comes from Kumkumahalli. A village where vermilion was made. Later renamed. Layers of identity, as usual.
What matters now - NIT Goa is here. National Institute of Technology. One of 31 NITs in the country. Right here in Cuncolim.
And families in this town, with an NIT literally in their backyard, are underestimating AISSEE.
Having NIT Goa nearby does something to how families in Cuncolim think about education. It raises ambition. That's good.
It also creates a false sense of what exam preparation looks like.
NIT entrance needs JEE preparation - structured, coaching-heavy, years of specific work. Everyone in Cuncolim knows this. Nobody sends a child to JEE with only school textbooks.
AISSEE works exactly the same way.
The Intelligence section. Pattern recognition, analogies, number series, spatial reasoning. Not in any school curriculum anywhere - not Goa Board, not CBSE, not ICSE. A child from Assolna or Velim who has spent months on school revision will encounter this section cold in January.
Not because they're unprepared for school. Because nobody told them AISSEE is a different exam entirely.
This town is unusual in Goa.
50% Hindu. 37% Christian. 11% Muslim. The 12 Vangodds - the old landowning clans - have identical clan names in the temple and the church. That kind of layered coexistence is rare.
It also means children here come from genuinely different educational backgrounds. Konkani medium, English medium, Hindi speakers from migrant families. Some with strong school infrastructure, some without.
None of that matters as much as people think for AISSEE.
What matters - did the child specifically practise Intelligence reasoning? Did they write full mock tests under real time pressure? Did someone sit with them after each test and explain exactly where the marks went?
Yes or no. That's the whole question.
Small batches. Eight students. Hard limit.
Thirty students - the teacher covers content and moves on. Nobody's going back. Eight students - the teacher sees who has been wrong on reasoning every week for six weeks. Stops. Finds the exact problem - is it series? analogy? spatial? - and fixes it. In October. Not March.
That's the moment where selections happen.
The program -
Parents hear the uncomfortable news in October. Not after January results.
NTA. Every January.
Class 6 - Age 10 to 12 years (March 31 cutoff - hard, no exceptions) Maths ยท English ยท General Knowledge ยท Intelligence Test
Class 9 - Age 13 to 15 years (March 31 cutoff - hard, no exceptions) Maths ยท English ยท GK ยท Science ยท Social Studies
Stop here. Check the date of birth now. March 31 is absolute - one day past it means a full year's wait. Check before anything else.
Cuncolim is in Salcete taluka. Margao is the commercial hub nearby. Connectivity is decent by Goa standards.
But daily coaching travel for a ten or eleven year old has its own rhythm here - school timings, activity schedules, the general pace of life in South Goa.
The Sainik school coaching online batch fits into that rhythm. Live classes on scheduled days. Recordings available all week. Sunday mock test every week. WhatsApp for doubts.
A student in Cuncolim and one in Assolna or Velim - same teachers, same tests, same section breakdown after every mock. No distance penalty.
Families from completely different states enroll too - some comparing Sainik school coaching in Telangana options, others checking Sainik school coaching in Telangana fees - because when the preparation genuinely works, where you live stops mattering.
Two paths. One exam.
April start - eight months. Content done by July. Weak areas found in August - reasoning gaps, GK blind spots, English comprehension - fixed through September. October, full mocks. December, calm. January, the child walks in having done this twenty times.
October start - three months. Everything compressed. Always catching up. January arrives and it shows.
Same paper. Different child in that hall.
No guaranteed selections. That word isn't used here.
Full syllabus. Real mock tests. Individual attention. OMR practice. Medical round awareness. Honest parent updates throughout. Everything within our control - done without shortcuts.
After that - your child and the paper.
Most parents who finish the program say this regardless of result: "We didn't leave anything on the table."
