On January 5, 1659, Aurangzeb defeated his brother near Fatehpur.
The Battle of Khajua. Shah Shuja, prince and son of Shahjahan, had claimed the Mughal throne after his father fell ill. He fought Aurangzeb at Khajua in present-day Fatehpur district. He lost. He fled eastward - eventually to Burma, where he died in obscurity.
Aurangzeb celebrated by building a 130-room lodge called Badshahi Bagh in this district.
The battle of Khajua decided the Mughal succession. Aurangzeb became emperor. Shah Shuja's claim ended here, in a field near Fatehpur.
Fatehpur is the "City of Doaba" - the land between two rivers. Ganga to the north. Yamuna to the south. The district is a rectangle of fertile alluvial land, bounded by sacred rivers on both sides, between Kanpur and Prayagraj.
On April 28, 1858, Jodha Singh Ataiya and 51 companions were hanged on a tamarind tree at Bawani Imali near Khajuha. The tree still stands. It hasn't grown since, people say.
VP Singh - the 7th Prime Minister of India - was elected to Parliament from Fatehpur. Sohan Lal Dwivedi - Rashtrakavi, national poet - was born here. Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi - journalist and freedom fighter, killed in Kanpur riots 1931 - from this district.
