Humayun escaped across the Ganga near Bilgram.
In 1540, Sher Shah Suri defeated the Mughal emperor Humayun at the Battle of Bilgram - fought near Bilgram and Sandi in present-day Hardoi district. Humayun fled. He needed to cross the Ganga quickly to escape Sher Shah's forces. He found a water-carrier - a bhisti - with a water bag (mashak). He crossed the Ganga on this water bag. As payment, he made the bhisti king for one day.
That crossing. Near Hardoi.
Naimisharanya is also in Hardoi district. Nimsar. One of India's most sacred sites - where sages gathered to hear the recitation of the Puranas, where the chakra of Vishnu fell to Earth, where Goswami Tulsidas mentions it in the Ramcharitmanas as a pious forest of extraordinary spiritual significance. Pilgrims come from across India. Ancient beyond measure.
