The oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India are in Jehanabad district.
Barabar Caves. Mauryan period - 322 to 185 BCE. Carved directly into granite during the reign of Emperor Ashoka and his son Dasharatha. The inner walls polished to a mirror finish so precise that modern engineers still study how it was achieved without metal tools. Ashokan inscriptions on the entrance gates.
EM Forster visited Barabar Caves in 1912. He used them as the model for the "Marabar Caves" in A Passage to India. The novel that defined British India's relationship with the subcontinent, that was made into a famous film - it has Jehanabad at its heart.
The ancient Magadha kingdom - the one from which the Maurya Empire and the Gupta Empire both grew - had its original territory here. Jehanabad, Gaya, Nalanda, Patna - these are the districts that constituted early Magadha before it expanded to cover most of northern India.
The district is named after Jahanara Begum Sahib - Shah Jahan's daughter and Aurangzeb's sister, one of the most influential women in Mughal history. She was the wealthiest woman in the Mughal Empire and spent her fortune on public wells, sarais, and mosques.
Population 1.13 million. Literacy 78.27%. Magahi dialect (79.5%). 45 kilometres from Patna.
Bihar has Sainik School Nalanda at Rajgir - the same Magadha region. Bihar state quota. Jehanabad families compete within Bihar only.
