Kancherla Gopanna built the Bhadrachalam temple - and was imprisoned for it.
As a Tahsildar under the Golconda Sultanate, Gopanna spent government revenue on constructing the Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple at Bhadrachalam. He was jailed by the Tanisha, the last Qutub Shahi sultan, who considered this misuse of public funds. Gopanna stayed imprisoned for 12 years, during which he composed the Dasakam - devotional songs to Rama that are still sung today. He was released, some accounts say, because Rama and Lakshmana appeared as two young men and paid the outstanding amount. The Tanisha reportedly received the coins and found them to be divine.
Gopanna's birthplace was Nelakondapalli village - in Khammam district. Gopanna became Bhakta Ramadasu - the Devoted Servant of Rama.
Khammam's name comes from "Kambam Mettu" - a hill where Lord Narasimha emerged from a pillar. The temple was referred to as 'Stamba Sikhari' and later 'Stambadhri.' Doli Gutta at 965 metres is Telangana's highest point - at Khammam district's northern end. Buddhist Mahastupa at Nelakondapalli. Only district in Telangana producing commercial-scale cashew.
