Pakyong Airport was India's 100th airport.

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated it on September 24, 2018. It made Sikkim the last state without an airport to finally have one. Before October 2018, the only airport reachable from Gangtok was Bagdogra - 124km away, five hours by road.

The airport was called "a breathtaking piece of engineering on the roof of the world" by CNN. Built at 4,500 feet (1,400m) on mountain terrain - the entire runway sits on an embankment wall 263 feet high over deep valleys. The runway itself was constructed on a hill plateau created by engineering, not by nature.

Pakyong district also has the National Research Centre for Orchids (ICAR). Bhaichung Bhutia studied at St. Xavier's School here. The Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary - where Royal Bengal Tigers were confirmed in January 2019 - is in this district. The Nathu La pass and Old Silk Route are accessible from here.
