The world's first tiger census was held in Palamu in 1932.

JW Nicholson - the Palamu divisional forest officer - conducted it. The method used: pugmarks. Reading the distinct footprints that each tiger leaves, mapping territories, estimating population. It was the first systematic attempt anywhere in the world to count tigers scientifically.

Four decades later, when India launched Project Tiger on April 1, 1973 - the conservation programme that Indira Gandhi championed after tiger numbers had fallen from 40,000 at the start of the 20th century to fewer than 2,000 - Palamu was designated one of the first nine tiger reserves in the country. Palamau Tiger Reserve. The only tiger reserve in Jharkhand.

Inside the reserve: Betla National Park. The acronym BETLA stands for Bison, Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Axis (deer) - the five flagship species of the park. Betla was one of the first national parks in India declared as a Project Tiger reserve. Palamu Fort - built by the Chero kings in the 16th century - stands inside the forest.

Medininagar (formerly Daltonganj) is the district headquarters. Auranga and North Koel rivers. Population 1.94 million. Literacy 64.14%. Part of Red Corridor. Borders Chhattisgarh.

The Chero kings ruled Palamu for centuries before the Mughal-era - then fell to the Mughals, then the British, then the post-independence state.

Jharkhand State Quota

Sainik School Tilaiya, Koderma. 67% Jharkhand quota. Palamu families compete within Jharkhand only.

Within the Jharkhand pool - preparation quality determines selection. The Intelligence section is where most Jharkhand children lose the marks they need.

The Intelligence Section

Pattern recognition: 16-week arc from April - 70-80%. October: 55-65%.

Number series: Agricultural and forest-edge economy. Practical arithmetic. AISSEE ↗ trap: calculation replacing recognition. April practice.

Analogies: Hindi dominant. Palamu's freedom movement history creates civic and political vocabulary awareness. Verbal analogy: 65-72% without training. Numerical and logical: six weeks each. Combined: +8-12 marks.

Spatial reasoning - Palamu's hilly forest terrain

Palamu is not flat. The Chota Nagpur Plateau creates hilly, forested terrain with river valleys cutting through. The Betla forest area - dramatic landscape with hills, gorges, and rivers - creates children with strong spatial awareness.

First-mock accuracy: 27-34%. April training: 66-74%. October: 48-57%.

GK - Project Tiger, BETLA, and the First Census

Palamu Tiger Reserve (1974): one of India's first 9 Project Tiger reserves - specifically and repeatedly testable AISSEE wildlife GK. "Which was one of India's first 9 Project Tiger reserves?" is a standard GK question.

BETLA acronym: Bison, Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Axis - specifically testable. "What does BETLA stand for?" appears in GK question banks.

World's first tiger census (1932): historical wildlife conservation - testable.

Betla National Park (1986): India's national parks, Jharkhand's only national park - testable.

Palamu Fort (Chero kings, 16th century): medieval Jharkhand history, inside tiger reserve - testable.

Project Tiger (1973): wildlife conservation movement, Indira Gandhi's initiative, tiger population decline - testable.

Gap areas: constitutional articles, defence organisation, science GK. Systematic coverage from April adds 10-15 marks.

Online Coaching

4,393 sq km, forested terrain, Betla park edge villages. Online batch: same teachers, same mocks, same diagnosis from any part of Palamu.

Families compare notes - some checking Sainik school coaching in Telangana fees - because when preparation works, the tiger trail name stops mattering.

April or October

April: Betla forest terrain spatial advantage converted, Intelligence completes, Project Tiger GK depth activated. January - prepared.

October: spatial at 48-57%, week 10 only. January first.

JW Nicholson counted tigers one pugmark at a time in 1932 - systematic, patient, methodical. AISSEE preparation requires the same approach from April.
