The Portuguese spent 250 years trying to control Ponda.
They failed. The Cumbarjua Canal was the border. On one side - Portuguese Goa, where temples were demolished, idols destroyed. On the other side - Ponda, under Maratha protection, where Hindu priests quietly crossed with their deity idols and rebuilt everything.
Shri Mangesh Temple. Shantadurga. Mahalsa Narayani. Ramnath. Nagesh. All relocated here from Portuguese territory. All still standing.
This is Goa's temple town. The Hindu heart of Goa. A place that resisted, preserved, outlasted.
That same stubbornness - knowing what matters and protecting it - should translate directly to how Ponda families approach AISSEE โ.
Most of them aren't there yet.
Ponda sits at the geographic heart of Goa. 28 kilometres from Panaji. 17 from Margao. Goa College of Engineering is here at Farmaguddi. Industrial estates at Kundaim and Bethora. Spice plantations drawing tourists from everywhere.
Literacy rate: 89.21%.
And yet - structured AISSEE preparation in Ponda is almost nonexistent.
This isn't surprising. Goa as a whole doesn't have a competitive exam coaching culture for AISSEE. No decades-old centres, no network of families who've been through the process, no seniors guiding juniors. The tradition simply hasn't built up here the way it has in UP or Bihar.
So families in Ponda do what families everywhere in Goa do. They prepare using school methods. For an exam that doesn't respond to school methods.
January arrives. The Intelligence section opens.
Pattern recognition. Number series. Analogies. Spatial reasoning.
Not in any school curriculum anywhere. Not Goa Board. Not CBSE โ. Not ICSE. A child from Priol or Farmaguddi or Kundaim who has spent four months seriously revising will sit in front of this section and feel completely lost.
Not weakness. Absence of specific preparation.
GK in AISSEE goes to places school books don't. Maths is formatted to mislead - familiar concepts, different framing, built to catch children who haven't seen the specific style before. English needs dedicated comprehension and vocabulary work beyond what even Ponda's good schools provide.
Four months of school revision. January arrives. Child freezes on Intelligence section. March - the call to us begins.
That call is preventable. Entirely.
Small batches. Eight students.
Not because of a brochure line. Because with eight, the teacher notices who's been wrong on reasoning questions for five consecutive weeks - stops the class, finds the specific problem, fixes it. In October. Not March.
The program -
Difficult parent conversations happen in October. Not after January results.
NTA. Every January.
Class 6 - Age 10 to 12 years (March 31 - hard cutoff, no exceptions) Maths ยท English ยท General Knowledge ยท Intelligence Test
Class 9 - Age 13 to 15 years (March 31 - hard cutoff, no exceptions) Maths ยท English ยท GK ยท Science ยท Social Studies
Stop here. Check the date of birth right now. March 31 is the hard line - one day past it means a full year's wait. No appeals. No flexibility. Check before anything else.
Ponda taluka covers 292 square kilometres. Priol, Kavlem, Shiroda, Bandora, Borim, Madkai - families spread across villages surrounding the town. Daily coaching travel for a ten-year-old has its complications here.
The Sainik school coaching online batch removes that complication entirely. Live classes on fixed days. Recordings available all week. Sunday mock test every week. WhatsApp for doubts.
A student in a village near Bondla sanctuary and one in Ponda town - same teachers, same tests, same breakdown after every mock. No difference.
Families from completely different states enroll too - some comparing Sainik school coaching in Telangana options, others checking Sainik school coaching in Telangana fees - because when preparation genuinely works, geography stops being an obstacle.
Two versions of the same year.
April start - eight months. Content done by July. Weak areas found in August, fixed through September. October, full mocks. December, calm. January - child walks in having done this twenty times.
October start - three months. Everything at once. Always catching up. January - runs out of road.
Same paper. Different child inside that hall.
No guaranteed selections. That phrase doesn't appear here.
Full syllabus. Real mock tests. Individual attention. OMR practice. Medical round awareness. Honest parent updates. Everything within our control - done with the same persistence those temple priests showed when they crossed the Cumbarjua Canal with their idols and rebuilt from scratch.
After that - your child and the paper.
"We didn't leave anything on the table." Most parents say this at the end of the program.
