Gandhi was born here in 1869.
Kirti Mandir stands where the house stood. Porbandar - ancient port city on the Kathiawar coast, between Dwarka and Somnath, home of Sudama, the childhood friend of Krishna. A city with more layered significance per square kilometre than almost anywhere in India.
Families here carry that weight quietly. Small district. 149 villages. Coastal fishing community alongside traders and educators. Literacy rate of 86.46%.
And now - families in Porbandar are beginning to look seriously at AISSEE โ. Sainik Schools. A defence career for their children.
The problem is the same one every family in Gujarat faces. They're preparing for the wrong exam.
AISSEE looks like a school exam from the outside. NTA conducts it. Class 6 and Class 9. Subjects: Maths, English, GK, Intelligence. March 31 age cutoff.
Families hear this and think: revise Maths, revise English, do some GK, show up in January.
That covers roughly 60% of what AISSEE actually tests.
The other 40% - the part that decides most outcomes - isn't covered by school revision at all.
Intelligence Section
This is the section that separates prepared children from unprepared ones. Pattern recognition. Number series. Analogies. Spatial reasoning.
Not in Gujarat Board syllabus. Not in CBSE โ. Not in any school curriculum in India - not in Porbandar, not in Ahmedabad, not anywhere.
A child who scores 90% in school will open this section in January and feel genuinely lost. The questions follow patterns that school has never shown them. The format is completely unfamiliar. Under time pressure - with a clock running and 200 other children in the hall - even strong children freeze on this section.
This isn't a talent problem. It's a preparation problem.
The fix is specific: six to eight weeks of systematic pattern training, starting in April. Not revision. Not textbook study. Training - drills that build pattern recognition as a skill, week by week, until the section becomes familiar and then manageable and then strong.
Children who start this training in April are genuinely different by October. They've gone from freezing on number series to solving them quickly. Children who start in November are still catching up in January.
GK Section
School GK and AISSEE GK are not the same category.
School GK is broad and general - civics, history, geography, basic science. AISSEE GK is targeted. It goes deep into specific areas: defence-related knowledge, current affairs in a particular format, geography at a level of specificity that school chapters don't reach.
The mistake: assuming good school GK translates fully to AISSEE GK. It translates partially. The gap - typically 8 to 12 marks - is meaningful in a competitive field. Targeted coverage of the specific areas AISSEE emphasises has to be part of the preparation, and it has to start early. A December crash course on GK is too late to close the gap properly.
Maths Section
The concepts are Class 5 level. That's true. What families miss is the framing.
AISSEE Maths questions are formatted specifically to mislead children who know the concept but haven't practised the AISSEE question style. The same calculation a child can do in school - appears in AISSEE wearing different conditions, different distractors, different framing. Children who've done weekly mock tests since April have seen this framing a hundred times. Children who haven't - lose marks on questions they technically know how to solve.
English Section
Not grammar. Not vocabulary lists. Reading comprehension under time pressure, in a format specific to AISSEE. The question types AISSEE uses for comprehension are particular - children who've practised them extensively answer them quickly. Children who haven't lose time and marks.
Eight students per batch. One specialist per section.
Not one teacher covering all four sections. Four different teachers - each responsible for one section, each seeing the same eight students every week.
The teacher who handles Intelligence knows exactly which pattern types each child struggles with. The teacher who handles GK knows exactly which areas each child is weak on. After every weekly mock test - not a combined score but a section-wise map. Which section. Which question type. Why marks went there.
When a child is consistently wrong on spatial reasoning - flagged in September, fixed before October mocks. When GK coverage is shallow on a specific topic area - addressed in August, not December.
Mock tests run from month one. Real AISSEE format. Real OMR sheets. Real time pressure. Not close to the exam - every week, from April. The familiarity with exam conditions that weekly mocks build is not replicable any other way.
OMR practice runs from day one. This sounds minor. It isn't. Wrong OMR filling - marking the wrong circle, skipping a question and shifting the entire answer column - has ended real selections before. Children who've filled OMR sheets weekly since April don't make this mistake in January. Children who fill them for the first time in November sometimes do.
Medical round preparation runs alongside the written preparation. Both stages need to be cleared. Most families in Porbandar - most families in Gujarat - treat this as something to worry about after January results. That's too late.
Parents hear the honest version in October. If scores aren't where they need to be - parents hear that in October. When there are still three to four months to fix it. Not in March after results.
Sainik School Balachadi. Jamnagar. One district away from Porbandar.
State quota - Porbandar children compete within Gujarat only for reserved seats. Not against families from UP, Bihar, or Rajasthan. Just Gujarat.
That's a real advantage - especially for a small coastal district where preparation has rarely been structured properly. A well-prepared Porbandar child is competing in a significantly smaller pool than national competition.
But the quota only converts into a seat if the child clears AISSEE with a competitive score. Preparation is what makes the structural advantage real.
NTA. Every January.
Class 6 - Age 10-12 years. March 31 cutoff. Absolute. Maths ยท English ยท GK ยท Intelligence Test
Class 9 - Age 13-15 years. March 31 cutoff. Absolute. Maths ยท English ยท GK ยท Science ยท Social Studies
Check the date of birth right now. March 31 is the hard line. One day past it - full year's wait. Check before making any other plan.
Porbandar district has three blocks and 149 villages. The coastal geography means some families are significantly spread out. Daily coaching travel isn't always practical.
The Sainik school coaching online batch handles this. Live classes on fixed days. Recordings all week. Sunday mock test every week. WhatsApp for doubts.
A student in a fishing village on the coast and one in Porbandar city - same teachers, same tests, same breakdown after every mock. No difference.
Families from other states check options too - some comparing Sainik school coaching in Telangana fees, others looking at online availability - because when preparation genuinely works, the district name stops mattering.
April - eight months. Intelligence training has time to work. GK coverage is thorough. Mock practice builds genuine familiarity. January - child walks in prepared.
October - three months. Intelligence training barely starts before it's time to sit the exam. GK gaps stay gaps. January arrives before the preparation does.
Same paper. Different child in that hall.
No guaranteed selections. Full syllabus. Real mocks. Individual attention. OMR practice. Medical round awareness. Honest parent updates. Everything within our control - done properly.
After that - your child and the paper.
