60% of Shopian's population grows apples.
Not a small agricultural community. The majority of the working population. 26,231 hectares of apple orchards covering the district. The Apple Bowl of Kashmir. Second-largest apple producer in J&K after Anantnag. 3 to 3.5 lakh metric tonnes of apple annually. Red Delicious, Golden Delicious - varieties that end up in markets across India and beyond.
The ancient name was "Sheen-Van" - snow forest in Kashmiri. Later became "Shah-payan" - the royal stay - perhaps because Mughal rulers rested here on the road to Kashmir. That road, the Mughal Road, runs through Shopian. Akbar travelled this route in 1586. Jahangir. Shah Jahan. The imperial entourages passed through what is now Shopian's Peer Ki Gali mountain pass.
The Battle of Shopian was fought here in 1819. Sikh forces under Ranjit Singh's general defeated the Afghan (Durrani) forces and captured the Kashmir Valley. It was the battle that transferred Kashmir from Afghan to Sikh control - the event that led to the Dogra rule and eventually to Gulab Singh's Treaty of Amritsar with the British in 1846.
Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary. Home to the markhor (a critically endangered wild goat - J&K's state animal), Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, leopard, Tibetan wolf.
Population approximately 337,000. Altitude 2,057 metres. South Kashmir.
J&K UT quota. Shopian families compete within J&K only. South Kashmir location - same quota pool as Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam.

Markhor: J&K state animal, critically endangered, Hirpora Sanctuary - wildlife and ecology GK.
Apple production geography: J&K's apple industry, Shopian's contribution, GI-tagged Kashmir apples - testable economic geography.

Families compare notes - some checking Sainik school coaching in Telangana fees - because when preparation works, the orchard name stops mattering.
April: Pir Panjal spatial advantage converted, Intelligence completes, Battle of Shopian GK activated. January - prepared.
October: spatial at 52-62%, week 10 only. January first.
