Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only hill station.
Everything about Rajasthan is desert - the Thar, the Aravalli's rocky scrubland, the sand and heat. Then, in Sirohi district near the Gujarat border, the Aravalli range rises to 1,722 metres at Guru Shikhar - the highest peak in the entire Aravalli range - and creates a cool, forested plateau unlike anything else in the state.
Dilwara Jain Temples on this plateau - five temples built between the 11th and 13th centuries from white marble - are considered the finest example of marble carving in India. The Vimal Vasahi temple (1031 CE) and the Luna Vasahi temple (1231 CE) are the most significant. The marble lattice work is so intricate that light passes through it.
Nakki Lake on Mount Abu is said to be India's first man-made lake - dug by gods using their nails (nakhi). The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University has its world headquarters at Madhuban, Mount Abu.
Population 1,037,185. Literacy 55.32% - below Rajasthan average.
Rajasthan has Sainik School Chittorgarh - 67% Rajasthan state quota. Sirohi families compete within Rajasthan only.
