The 14th Dalai Lama crossed into India at Tawang on March 31, 1959.

He had fled Tibet, travelling at night through mountain passes to evade Chinese forces. He crossed the McMahon Line. Tawang was the first Indian town he reached. He rested at the Tawang Monastery for several days before moving to Tezpur in Assam - arriving there on April 18.

That monastery had stood since 1681. Founded by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso at the instruction of the 5th Dalai Lama.
