Asia's oldest oil refinery is in this district.
The story starts with elephants.
In 1867, a group of Italian engineers laying railway tracks for the Assam Railways and Trading Company noticed oil stains on the feet of elephants returning from the dense jungle near Makum. They followed the trail. They found petroleum seeping from the ground.
In 1889, an engineer named Willie Lake convinced the company to drill. He shouted at his workers: "Dig, boy, dig!" The town that grew around those oil wells became Digboi - from those two words.
The refinery at Digboi was commissioned on December 11, 1901. It is Asia's first oil refinery. It is the oldest operating refinery in the world. India's petroleum industry began in Digboi, Tinsukia district - 7 years after Edwin Drake drilled the world's first oil well in Pennsylvania.
The Tinsukia district is where Upper Assam gives way to Arunachal Pradesh. Tea gardens. Oil fields. The Lohit, Dihing, and Brahmaputra rivers. Dibru-Saikhowa National Park - home to feral horses, river dolphins. Jnan Bahan Deori (freedom fighter) from here. The district borders Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar's border is nearby. Second World War - the district was a strategic supply route. Digboi has a WWII war cemetery.
