Nawab Amir Khan - a Pathan, a Pindari leader who had terrorised central India with his irregular cavalry forces for years - came to an agreement with the British in 1817. He surrendered his marauding operations. The British granted him a territory. He settled in Tonk and founded a state.

The Sunehri Kothi - "Golden Mansion" - was built by a later Nawab. The interior is covered in gold work, mirror mosaics, and coloured glass. It is among Rajasthan's most unusual palaces.

The Arabic-Persian manuscript library at Tonk holds one of India's largest collections of handwritten manuscripts in Arabic and Persian - thousands of volumes covering theology, astronomy, mathematics, and poetry.
