INS Gomantak sits on the hill above St Andrew's Church.
Indian Navy headquarters in Goa. Right here in Vasco. INS Hansa - the naval air station - controls Dabolim Airport. Goa Shipyard Limited builds Navy and Coast Guard vessels at the port. The Naval Aviation Museum nearby is the only one of its kind in Asia.
Vasco da Gama is the most defence-flavoured city in Goa.
One-third of India's ore exports leave from Mormugao Port. The city has two Kendriya Vidyalayas run under the Indian Navy. A Navy Children School. The National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research at Headland Sada.
This city breathes defence. Lives next to it. Works around it daily.
And yet - families here wanting to put their children into Sainik Schools are walking without a map.
Vasco has more daily exposure to India's armed forces than almost any other city in Goa. Naval officers, port workers, defence contractors, merchant navy families - the culture of service is visible here in a way it isn't in Panaji or Margao.
But AISSEE preparation? Essentially absent.
Children of naval families in Varunapuri and Mangor Hill go to Kendriya Vidyalayas. Good schools. Strong academics. And still - when January arrives and these children sit for AISSEE โ - the Intelligence section stops them cold.
Not because KV schools are weak. Because no school - KV, CBSE โ, Goa Board, any board - covers the Intelligence section. Pattern recognition, number series, analogies, spatial reasoning. It isn't in any syllabus anywhere in India.
Proximity to the Navy doesn't prepare a child for AISSEE. Specific coaching does.
The exam has four sections for Class 6. Five for Class 9.
Each section has its own logic. Its own preparation requirement. School revision addresses almost none of them specifically.
GK in AISSEE covers ground school textbooks don't go near. Maths is formatted to mislead - same concepts, different framing, built to catch children who haven't seen the specific AISSEE style before. English needs comprehension and vocabulary work beyond what even good schools provide.
And Intelligence - that section needs dedicated training. Not knowledge. Not revision. Training. Weeks of it. Pattern recognition doesn't come from reading harder textbooks.
Four months of school revision. January arrives. Intelligence section opens. Child freezes.
That's the story in Vasco. Repeated every year.
Small batches. Eight students. Always.
Because with eight, the teacher catches who's been wrong on reasoning five weeks straight - stops, finds the specific problem, fixes it. In October. Not after March results.
The program -
Difficult conversations with parents happen in October. Not after results.
NTA. Every January.
Class 6 - Age 10 to 12 years (March 31 - hard cutoff, no exceptions) Maths ยท English ยท General Knowledge ยท Intelligence Test
Class 9 - Age 13 to 15 years (March 31 - hard cutoff, no exceptions) Maths ยท English ยท GK ยท Science ยท Social Studies
Stop reading. Check the date of birth right now. March 31 is absolute. One day past it - full year's wait. Naval families get transferred mid-year. Check the DOB before making any plan.
Vasco sits at the tip of the Mormugao peninsula. Chicalim, Dabolim, Bogmalo, New Vaddem - families spread across the peninsula and beyond. Daily coaching travel with port traffic and airport road congestion isn't simple.
The Sainik school coaching online batch removes that problem. Live classes on fixed days. Recordings available all week. Sunday mock test every week. WhatsApp for doubts.
A student in Varunapuri and one near Bogmalo beach - same teachers, same tests, same section breakdown after every mock. No difference.
Naval families who get posted and transferred mid-year especially value this. The online batch doesn't break when postings happen.
Families from other states enroll too - some comparing Sainik school coaching in Telangana options, others checking Sainik school coaching in Telangana fees - because when preparation works, location stops mattering.
Two versions of the same year.
April start - eight months. Content done by July. Weak areas found in August, fixed through September. October, full mocks. December, calm. January - child walks in prepared.
October start - three months. Everything at once. Always behind. January - runs out of road.
Same paper. Different child in that hall.
No guaranteed selections. That phrase doesn't appear here.
Full syllabus. Real mock tests. Individual attention. OMR practice. Medical round awareness. Honest parent updates. Everything within our control - done without shortcuts.
After that - your child and the paper.
"We didn't leave anything on the table." Most parents say this when the program ends.
