Pt. Bhimsen Joshi - Bharat Ratna 2009, the towering voice of the Kirana Gharana - was born in Gadag. He left Gadag as a teenager, following music across India until he found his guru Sawai Gandharva in Kundgol. But the city of his birth is Gadag.
Puttaraj Gawai - Hindustani classical vocalist, founder of the Veereswara Punyashrama (a residential ashram providing shelter, education, and music training to orphans and the visually impaired since 1936) - was born in Devagiri village, Gadag. His ashram has produced numerous Hindustani music artists.
India's first cooperative society was founded at Kanaginahal village, Gadag district.
Lakkundi: 12 kilometres from Gadag, famous for 101 stepwells (kalyani / pushkarni) and ancient Chalukya temples. The stepwells themselves are engineering monuments - engineered water conservation from the 11th-12th centuries.
