In 1705, the Nawab of Malerkotla stood up in Aurangzeb's court and said no.

Wazir Khan, the Mughal governor of Sirhind, had ordered Guru Gobind Singh's two young sons - Zorawar Singh, aged 9, and Fateh Singh, aged 7 - to be bricked alive inside a wall. Nawab Sher Mohammad Khan of Malerkotla rose and protested publicly. He said punishing children for their father's actions was against the principles of Islam.

His protest was ignored. The boys were executed.

But Guru Gobind Singh heard what the Nawab had done. His "Haa Da Nara" - the cry of "No" - earned the Guru's blessing: "Malerkotla shall remain in peace."

In August 1947, when every neighbouring district - Nabha, Jind, Patiala - was engulfed in communal violence during Partition, Malerkotla remained calm. The only town in all of Punjab where this happened. The Muslims of Malerkotla did not go to Pakistan. They remained. They are still here.

Punjab's only Muslim-majority municipality. Established as a separate district June 2, 2021. Population 429,754. Literacy 76.28%.
