Salem has two nicknames - and they couldn't be more different.
Steel City. Mango City.
The Salem Steel Plant - a Steel Authority of India (SAIL) facility producing cold-rolled stainless steel - is one of Asia's largest stainless steel plants. Kanchamalai nearby has the iron ore deposits that feed it. And C. Rajagopalachari - "Rajaji," the first Indian Governor-General, the man who became free India's first and only Indian-born Governor-General before the republic was proclaimed - began his political career here.
Then there are mangoes. The Malgova mango, GI-tagged, grown extensively in Salem district, is considered one of India's finest varieties.
And Yercaud - the hill station at 1,515m in the Shevaroy Hills of the Eastern Ghats, 35km from the city - is called the "Poor Man's Ooty" for its lower cost and equally scenic landscape.
Population 3.48 million district. 5th largest city in Tamil Nadu. Literacy 75.7%.
Tamil Nadu has Sainik School Amaravathinagar - 67% TN state quota. Salem families compete within Tamil Nadu only.
Pattern recognition, number series, analogies, spatial reasoning. Untrained: 20-25%. After 16 weeks from April: 70-80%.
Pattern recognition - the four-phase arc
Phase 1 (Weeks 1-4): Scanning reflex. Checking orientation, count, shading, form automatically. 38-46%.
Phase 2 (Weeks 5-8): Compound detection. Two rules simultaneously. Requires Phase 1 automaticity. 55-65%.
Phase 3 (Weeks 9-12): AISSEE ↗ speed. 65-72%.
Phase 4 (Weeks 13-16): Full mocks, diagnosis. 70-80%.
October: Phase 2 half-formed. 55-60%.
Number series - steel and agricultural arithmetic and the recognition trap
Salem's steel, textile, and mango-belt economy creates arithmetically confident children. AISSEE number series traps confident calculators. Complex series types (Fibonacci, factorial, prime-based) cannot be calculated within 45 seconds. Type-recognition, built through April practice, solves this in 6-10 seconds.
Analogies and spatial reasoning
Verbal: Tamil dominant, Kongu Nadu cultural depth. 65-72% verbal accuracy without training. Numerical and logical: 6 weeks each.
Spatial: Salem is surrounded by hills - Nagaramalai, Jeragamalai, Shevaroy Hills. Above flat-plains baseline. First-mock: 24-31%. April training: 65-73%. October: 47-56%.
Salem Steel Plant (SAIL, stainless steel, one of Asia's largest): India's steel geography, PSU companies - testable AISSEE GK.
Malgova mango (GI-tagged, Salem): India's GI-tagged agricultural products - testable.
C. Rajagopalachari "Rajaji" (first Indian Governor-General, Salem political career): testable modern India history.
Yercaud ("Poor Man's Ooty," Eastern Ghats): Tamil Nadu hill stations - testable.
Largest magnesite deposits in India (Salem): India's mineral geography - testable.
Eight students. One specialist per section. Weekly mocks. Section-wise diagnosis. October conversation. OMR from day one.
