Three million people gather here for one night of fire.
Karthigai Deepam. A giant cauldron, lit with three tonnes of ghee, set ablaze atop Arunachala Hill. Visible for miles. The festival commemorates the legend of Shiva manifesting as an infinite column of fire that neither Brahma nor Vishnu could find the beginning or end of.
Arunachaleswarar Temple - at the base of the hill - is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, the five temples representing the five elements. This one represents Agni, fire. The presiding deity is Agni Lingam. Built and expanded across centuries - Chola inscriptions from 850-1280 CE, Vijayanagara additions in the 15th-16th century, a 66-metre gopuram built by Krishnadevaraya himself.
Girivalam - the practice of circumambulating the entire 14-kilometre base of the hill, barefoot, on full moon days - draws lakhs of devotees every month and reaches its peak during Karthigai Deepam.
Tamil Nadu has Sainik School Amaravathinagar - 67% TN state quota. Tiruvannamalai families compete within Tamil Nadu only.
