Haveri is the exact centre of Karnataka.
Not approximately. Exactly - equidistant from Bidar in the extreme north to Kollegal in the extreme south. The same equal distance from the western coast to the eastern border. The geographic midpoint. The gateway district to North Karnataka.
"Havu" in Kannada means snake. "Keri" means lake or village. Haveri: the village of snakes by the lake. The Tungabhadra river, the Varada, the Dharma, and the Kumudwati all flow through the district. Water was abundant. Snakes were presumably more so.
Kanakadasa was born in Bada village, Haveri district.
He was one of the most significant Bhakti movement poet-saints of Karnataka. A Kuruba (shepherd) by community - not Brahmin, not in the upper-caste hierarchy that dominated temple access in his era. According to tradition, he was refused entry to the Udupi Krishna temple because of his community. He prayed from outside. The wall of the temple cracked open to reveal the deity's back - a fact commemorated in the "Kanakana Kindi" (Kanaka's window) in the Udupi temple.
His compositions are still sung in Karnataka's classical music tradition. His Mohanatarangini, Nalacharitre, and devotional kirtanas are canonical.
VK Gokak - Jnanpith Award 1990 (Kannada literature, novel Bharatiya) - was born in Savlagi, Haveri district. SR Bommai - 11th Chief Minister of Karnataka, then Union Minister - from Shiggaon, Haveri district.
Byadgi Chilli: grown in Byadgi taluk, known for its dark red colour and high oleoresin content (more colour, less heat). One of Karnataka's largest chilli markets.
Population 1.60 million. Literacy 77.4%.
Karnataka has Sainik School Kodagu and Sainik School Bijapur (Karnataka state quota). Haveri children compete within Karnataka's quota pool.
